STUDY OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF SALVIA

Abstract

ABSTRACTAntimicrobial activity of cold aquous and ethanol extracts with fourconcentrations of each one (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 %) mg/ml of Salvia officinalisleaves were estimated against four types of pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus,Klebsiella spp. and St. pyogenes) after incubation at (37)oC for (24)hr by usingWellDiffuion AssayMethod. Antimicrobial activity of both extracts was compared withthat for a number of antibiotics include Ampicilin, Cephalexin, Erythromycin,Amoxicilin, Gentamicin and Tetracyclin by using antibiograme test. Both extractsof Salvia officinalis showed clear antimicrobial activity against pathogenicbacteria, which this activity was enhanced with the increasing of concentrationsbelongs to them. The latest concentration (0.4%)mg/ml of both extracts gavehighest activity against E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and St. pyogenes with noantimicrobial activity against S. aureu and E. coli were the least testing bacteriaaffective by the concentrations of both extracts, while St. pyogenes was the mostaffective one. Antimicrobial activity of cold aquous and ethanol extracts of Salviaofficinalis was better than that to Gentamicin against Klebsiella spp., while theantimicrobial activity of latest concentration of ethanolic extract against St.pyogenes was better than the effect of same antibiotic. The effect of Gentamicin ,Erythromycin and Tetracyclin against E. coli was better than that of both extractsconcentrations. The concentrations of both extracts had no clear antimicrobialactivity against S. aureus ,which affect by Gentamicin and Tetracyclin. A resist ofpathogenic bacteria to Ampicillin, Amoxicilin and Cephalexin was noticed.
