The Relations between the Gulf States and Turkey 1973-1990

Abstract

The First Chapter encompasses the historical background. Itpursues the Ottoman existence in the Arab Gulf. The SecondChapter overviews the diplomatic and political relationsbetween Turkey and the Arab Gulf States. The chapter throwslight on the regional and international factors affecting theserelations. Finally, this chapter discusses the cultural relationsand the role of the Islamic Conference Organization inactivating the relations between Turkey and the Gulf StatesThird Chapter tackles the strategic aspects of te Turkishrelations with the Arab Gulf States. It sheds light on themilitary co-operation in such fields as weapons sales to the GulfStates besides the role of Turkey in the context of USA strategyin the Gulf and the Iran-Iraq war deployment its impact onboth Turkey and the Gulf-States, however, the chapter hints atthe growing Turkish and Gulf-States fears from the everincreasingmilitary might of their restless neighbors. Finally,the chapter provides an account on peace-pipes which weredesigned to provide the Gulf-States lacking water resourceswith drinking water. Then the chapter is rounded off by anaccount on the 2nd of July 1990 events when Iraqi forces sweptKuwait the Fourth Chapter is devoted to the economicrelations between Turkey and the Arab Gulf.
