Abstract

AbstractThis paper deals with al marqabh = the observatory, as it is a common subject in pre- Islamic poetry. It appears that the subject is important as we find many jahily poets interested with describing and expressing their point of view about it since the early emergence of Arabic poetry. This would mean that we are in front of a poetic phenomenon with special significance in that age, but it does not have the scholar’s enough attention. The paper tries to discover the semantic and aesthetic dimensions of this phenomenon trough out its historical development. the main result of the paper is that the observatory gradually has an existential and poetic value, until it turned into a symbol of pre Islamic Arabs aspiring to rise above their frustrating reality.
