Use of Gamma-ray spectra Analysis technique for measuring the Radioactivity in water and sediments samples of Al-Husseiniya River (Karbala Governorate )

Abstract

The radioactivity of 10 water samples and 10 sediments samples collected from different sites along Al-Husseiniya river (Karbala) weremeasured using HPGE detector with 50% efficiency and 2.2keV energy resolution at the 1332 keV of Co-60 source . The sediments results showed activity belonging to U-238 and Th-232 series and K-40, while the water samples were under detection levels .The equivalent radioactivity of radium (Raeq) ,absorbed dose rate (AD) , annual effective dose (AEDE) and external hazard coefficient (Hex) are calculated to evaluate radiation dangers .The results revealed that Raeq values were under the internationally permissible values ,while (AD) and (AEDE) values were generally higher the permissible limit, and Hex values were less than one for all results .
