Pollution of Shatt al-Arab water by heavy elements resulting from thermal power plants and their health effects

Abstract

The current study was conducted to show the effect of the thermal power stations in the concentrations of some heavy elements in the Shatt al - Arab water، in two stations (Al - Haritha Station and Al - Nujaibiya Station). It was analyzed on the basis of two winter seasons (January and summer) and 2016. That the presence of the Hartha and Nujeibeh stations close to the Shatt al-Arab and Kerma River affected the quality of their water so as to use water for cooling، washing and dumping liquid waste into the stream without treatment. The results of the present study showed that there is a difference in the level of concentration of the heavy metals spatially and temporally in the water (water، chromium، zinc، tantalium، polonium، thorium). Shatt al-Arab is due to a number of factors، including natural and human by the city's dumping of countless quantities of industrial pollutants in the Arab region، which led to the deterioration of the quality of water in the city and the transmission of these pollutants in turn through the network of water liquefaction neighborhood districts. Making water a significant threat to the health of the residents of the city of Basra. The concentrations of water pollutants have also increased to the extent that they exceed WHO-approved health standards and internationally allowed according to the sites studied.
