Abstract

Background:THilnahyroidcancerisacancerthatstartsinthethyroidglandandthought toberelatedtoanumberofenvironmentalandgeneticpredisposingfactors.HumanPapil- lomaVirus(HPV)thevirusthatcausescervicalcancer,isalsolinkedtothroatcancerand isoneamongtheirassociatedinfectiveagents.Objective: This study aimed at detecting DNA of HPV genotype-18 using in situ hybridizationtechniqueinthyroidtissuesfrombenignthyroidhyperplasiaandthyroidcar- cinoma,andelucidatetheassociationbetweenthisHPV-18andthyroidcarcinogenesis.PatientsandMethods:Sixty(60)formalin-fixed,paraffinembeddedthyroidtissue blockswereobtained,amongthem(30)tissuebiopsiesfromthyroidcarcinomawithgrade Iand(20)benignthyroidneoplasmtissueblocksaswellas(10)autopsiesfromapparently normalthyroidtissueswerecollectedfromthearchivesofForensicMedicineInstitute/Babil andusedasthyroidhealthycontrolgroup.DetectionofHPV-18wasdonebyusinghighly sensitive version of in situ hybridizationtechnique.Results:Amongmalignantthyroidtumors56.7%patientshadHPV-18while35%HPV- 18positivitywasdetectedinbenignthyroidtumorgroup.Noneofhealthythyroidtissues revealedISHreactions.Therewas32.7%femalehadHPV-18,and24%malehadHPV-18. NosignificantstatisticalassociationswerenoticedbetweenthepresenceofHPV-18andthe ageofthosepatients.Conclusion:HumanPapillomavirusgenotype-18couldsharearoleinpathogenesisof thisgroupofpatientswiththyroidcancers.
