Incidence of Orchiectomy in Patients with Testicular Torsion Treated in The Urology Department in Hilla Teaching Hospital

Abstract

Acutetorsionofthetesticle(s)isoneofthecommonemergenciesinthefieldofurology; itresultsineitherdecreaseorcompletedisruptionoftesticularbloodflow,itaffectabout 4.5/100000lessthan25yearsmale.Thegoldenperiodoftesticularsavinginterventionis thefirst6–8hoursfromtheonsetofsymptoms.Theaimofthisstudyistoobtainastatisticaboutpatientswithtesticulartorsiontreated atourcenter,concentratingonpatientsendedwithorchiectomy.Atotalnumberof25patientspresentedtoourcenterduringthestudyperiod(2years).Aftertakingfullhistoryandscrotalexamination,allpatientssenttoDopplerscrotalultrasonographytoconfirmthediagnosisandassessvascularity,andthenallpatientsun-derwent scrotal exploration through a scrotal incision. Orchiopexy or orchiectomywasdonedependingonviabilityofthetestis.Contralateralorchiopexywasdoneinallpatients.Fortypercentofourpatientsendedwithorchiectomy,theincidenceoforchiectomywashigherinpatientslivedinruralareas(70%),therealsowasstrongrelationshipbetweencoldweatherand the incidence of orchiectomy.Themostimportantfactorindetectingtestissalvagebilitywasthedurationofsymptoms beforepresentation.
