Colour Implication in English and Arabic Religious Texts: A Contrastive Study

Abstract

Colours are important concepts in linguistics and in human lifein general. In addition to their various senses and associations, coloursaffect human sensation, feeling, and mood. Such associations,senses, and effects vary with the variation of context, culture, surroundingenvironment and other factors. The study aims to findout implementations of colours in the Holy Bible and the GloriousQuran, their meanings, connotations, the effect of context on suchconnotations in English and Arabic as well as the purposes behindusing colours in these texts. Moreover, it aims to reveal the similaritiesand differences between these religious texts concerning theuse of colours.The most important conclusions the study arrives at are: basic colourterms are similar in both English and Arabic. Although there arecultural differences between English and Arabic, there are certainsimilarities concerning colour connotations, meanings and uses.
