ASSAY OF TETRACYCLINE IN PHARMACEUTICAL PREPARATIONS, SPIKED INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER AND CHICKEN MEAT SAMPLES USING VISIBLE SPECROPHOTOMETER TECHNIQUE

Abstract

A simple, accurate, and rapid visible spectrophotometric method has beendeveloped for the determination of tetracycline hydrochloride in pure, pharmaceuticalpreparations and environmental water samples. The method is based on the oxidationof tetracycline hydrochloride by sodium hypochlorite in alkaline medium to form ared colored product with an absorption maximum at 400 nm. Beer’s Law was obeyedin the range of 2-24 µg/ml with molar absorptivity of 1.346×104 L.mol.-1.cm-1. Therelative standard deviation of the method was less than 2% and accuracy (averagerecovery ) was 100 ± 0.85 % .The optimum conditions for all color development aredescribed and the proposed method has been successfully applied for thedetermination of tetracycline hydrochloride in pharmaceutical preparations, chickenmeat and waste water samples.
