The Effect of Silent Reading on the Development of Speed Reading Skills at Fifth Preparatory School Students

Starting with reading is an educational requirement which must be achieved when learners express their thought, and the transfer their ideas, the mastery and the control on the reading skills is one of the school's responsibilities. Owing to the importance of reading in EFL and since no such a study has been conducted in Iraq, the present study aims at : - Finding out the effect of silent reading on the development of reading speed skills at fifth preparatory students. It is hypothesized that there is no statistically significant difference between the mean score of the experimental group, and that of the control group in reading speed skill .The sample of the study consists of fifth preparatory female students in Baghdad at Al-Zahraa' Preparatory School for Girls, in Baghdad Karkh/2 Directorate which was randomly selected . The main instrument of the current paper is a multiple-choice test.Specific conclusions have been obtained , some of which are the subjects of the experimental group of the present work have dealt positively with the suggested technique, showing high degree of interest and motivation.Also, the subjects of the experimental group lack the ability to distinguish between the types of the reading skills .
