A hyppoboscid fly (hyppoboscidae diptera) from mosul, Iraq

Abstract

A four years old cow of non-descriptive breed was brought to the Veterinary Clinic of the college suffering from mastitis. Upon inspection, five flies were seen attached to the skin of the cow. Three of them were seen on the udder, while the rest were found attached at the perineal region. These flies were closely associated with the cow and on disturbing them by hand, they did not leave the animal. Two of them were collected using insect collection aspiration tube for subsequent identification. Both flies were found to have the same general characters. They were reddish brown in colour and the wing veins crowded at the anterior border of the wing. Mouth parts had thick unsheathed protractible proboscis. The general morphology of these flies were found to be similar to that described by Harwood R. F. and James, M, 1979. As there was no record of this fly for the first time in Iraq. Further studies are needed to determine their role in the transmission of different pathogen to cattle as well as other animals in this country.
