Yasser Arafat’s Policy Towards Jordan (1968-1974) A Study in the Palestinian-Jordan Documents

Abstract

Abstract This research investigates the policy of the late Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat towards Jordan during 1968-1974. It reviews the most important developments in the relations between Jordan and the Palestinian factions during that period, such as Karameh Battle, the growing popularity of PLO and commando activity in Jordan. It also examines the consequences of these developments which deepened the gap between Jordan and PLO and augmented their disagreements and disputes which eventually lead to the explosion of the situation in 1970/'71 and the expulsion of the commando activity from Jordan. The research also reflects on Arafat's policy in the period after September events. The major characteristic of this period was the political strife between Jordan and PLO over representation of the Palestinian people. This strife was manifested in the project of United Arab Kingdom, Geneva Convention for Peace and the 7th Arab League Summit in Rabat, Morocco.
