Tolerances of the Stimulated Brillouin Scattering Effects on L-band Raman Fiber Amplifier

Abstract

: In this paper, the tolerances of the stimulated Brillouin scattering effects on L-band Raman fiber amplifier is investigated utilizing (OptiSystem10). The Raman amplification is simulated using the bidirectional fiber (Bi-Fiber) Raman amplifier model. A comparison was made between the co- and counter-pumped Raman fiber amplifier in terms of; gain on-off, large signal gain saturation and stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold (SBSTH) power. Different single mode fiber lengths were used as Raman gain medium (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 km). The tolerances of SBS in counter-pumped scheme is higher than it in co-pumped scheme by about 47% at Raman pump power (RPP) of 300 mW and gain medium length of 50 km. In addition, when the fiber length was increased, the SBSTH decreases and at longer fiber length (>40 km), the SBSTH saturates at -3 dBm and 0 dBm for co- and counter-pumped respectively
