About some of the economic dimensions of literacy in Iraq

Abstract

The researcher dealt with the problem of illiteracy in Iraq at that period in the history of the country (the monarchy), confirming that it represents a major social dilemma, as it is one of the factors of delay and decline in the ladder of civilization, noting with interest that the social factor for the spread of illiteracy is the loss of social justice among the sons of a single nation. He also pointed out that “if the standard of living in a society is very low and the majority of its members suffer from poverty and suffer from disease, then it is not surprising that we find them prey to ignorance and illiteracy.” It is worth noting that the writer who tried to link between the level of social development and the level of economic development finally reached the truth. The nature and manner of using the land economically depends mainly on the peasant’s awareness and salvation from illiteracy. Thus, economic development is an embodiment of social development in which literacy is a major pillar.
