Air Pollution and Analysis of Hydrocarbon Levels Except for Methane NMHC in Basra Governorate (2015-2018)

Abstract

Basra Governorate is witnessing significant air pollution due to oil extraction and production, vehicle exhaust, lack of projects aimed at improving the environmental reality, and non-observance of environmental requirements by various activities in both sectors (government and private), which led to the exposure of citizens to various diseases of the respiratory system, heart and nervous Central system diseases. Among them and the most dangerous of which is the infection of various cancers. This research was prepared to show the level of air pollution, especially with hydrocarbons, except for methane, NMHC, in Basra Governorate. Three areas were selected (City Centre, Al-Haritha, and Abi Al-Khasib) due to the availability of the required data. The data recorded in the monitoring stations (fixed ambient air quality monitoring stations) of the Basra Environment Directorate were analysed. For the years (2015 and 2018.), where it was found through the research that the concentrations of hydrocarbons, except for methane, in all monitoring points increased several times more than the national determinants of ambient air quality allowed during the research period of 0.24 ppm per 3 hours.and health effects. Among the most important steps to be taken is the commitment of the oil companies operating in the province to the legislation and laws to limit the significant and dangerous environmental impacts on the health of citizens, as it is the main cause of air pollution and the deterioration of its quality in the province. Addressing the problem of the shortage of electric energy, increasing the processing hours for citizens, and developing the necessary solutions to reduce the effects of the massive increase in the number of vehicles.
