Mathematical Model of Autoclave Curing of Epoxy Resin Based Composite Materials

Abstract

Polymer matrix composites using thermosetting resins as the matrix areincreasingly finding use in several applications. Process modelingdescribing the governing curing has played an important role, inimproving the fundamental understanding and development ofcomposite fabrication techniques. In present work, the thermokineticinvolved in the autoclave curing of fiber-reinforced epoxy has beenstudied by means of a computer program, using the transient heatconduction equation coupled with kinetic equation, and the initial andboundary conditions. In the analysis the cure assembly is assumed toconsist of a tool plate, composite laminate. The temperature distributionand the degree of reaction are obtained as a function of position andtime.
