L Forms for Haemophilus parainfluenzae and Haemophilus aphrophilus Isolated From Patients with Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Mosul City

Abstract

Two hundred samples were collected from naso-pharyngeal area and oro-pharyngeal areas from patients admitted to AL-Salam General Hospital and AL-Khansaa Teaching Hospital delivary at Mosul city from January 2003 till April 2004. Their ages ranged between 4>40 years for both sexes. To study the effect of this antibiotic on the formation of the L-shape for the microorganism under study, the liquid medium (A) containing different concentration of Vancomycin and using the bacterial suspension containing 105 cfu/ml and the result showed that the MIC for H. parainfluenzae was 1.2g/ml and for H. aphrophilus was 0.6g/ml, L-shapes were seen in these concentrations while when the liquid medium (B) used the bacterial concentration of 107 cfu/ml, the MIC was 1.2g/ml and 0.6g/ml for H. parainfluenzae and H. aphrophilus ,respectively L-forms also seen in these concentrations. When the solid media (A) and (B) were inoculated with 10-7in the presence of Vancomycin , L-shape were seen in the inhibition zone round the antibiotic in a low concentration on the solid medium (A) for H. parainfluenzae, while these shapes were absent using the solid medium (B) for this bacteria in using both concentrations 10-1 and 10-7, and it is absent for H. aphrophilus using the two solid media and the two concentrations.
