Prevalence of Chondrocalcinosis in Iraqi Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract

Background: Chondrocalcinosis is frequent complication of knee osteoarthritis. Clinical and radiological evaluation as an index for detecting osteoarthritis was measured. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of chondrocalcinosis (CC) in Iraqi patients above the age of 50 years with knee osteoarthritis (OA).Patients & Methods: One hundred patients (61 females and 39 males) with knee OA diagnosed according to the criteria for classification of idiopathic OA of the knee and classified according to Kellgren-Lawrence radiographic classification of tibio-femoral joint. All patients were examined clinically and radiologically for presence of CC.Results: Twenty-three of 100 patients with OA showed CC. they were 11 (18%) females from 61 patients and 12 (31%) males from 39 patients.Conclusion: The study suggest that there is increased risk of CC in patients with knee OA which is more reported in older age group even if they were asymptomatic.Keyword: Chondrocalcinosis, osteoarthritis
