Determination of Humoral Immunity in Adults MaleAsthmatic patients

Abstract

Abstract Objective:The aim of this study was to check humoral immunostatus of asthmatic patients and comparing of these parameters with those who are in attack and rest (between the attacks) with a control groups. Methods: Sixty adult male patients with asthma were included in this study, their age range between 18-24 years. Forty-five were in attack state and fifteen were in rest (between the attack). All cases were admitted to Al-Rasheed military hospital during November 2001 and April 2002. Twenty age matched apparently healthy men were included as a negative control.Eight males with signs and symptoms of asthma (mostly chronic bronchitis patients) were regarded as positive control.Ten ml of blood sample were withdrawn from each patient as well as from controls. To detect humoral immune response, radial immundiffusion was used to determine the concentration of complement components (C3, C4) as well as immmunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgM and IgA).Results: Complement levels were decreased significantly in attack group in comparisons with control groups. (P<0.05).IgG and IgM levels showed no difference in comparing with control groups while IgA level have showed a marked significant elevation in attack group only when compared with control groups. Key words: Asthma, Humoral immunity.
