PERFORMANCE OF FORAGE SORGHUM AND MILLET HYBRIDS GROWN IN IRRIGATED AREA OF IRAQ

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out during the of growing seasons 2008 and 2009 at Abu-Graib region , Baghdad, Iraq. using randomize complete block design, to evaluate the performance of five hybrid sorghum forage (Sugargraze, Chopper, Pacific-BMR, Superdan-2, and Sweet jumbo). and one hybrid Millet (Nutrifeed).The Results indicated that hybrid Nutrifeed was superior in green matter, dry matter yield, dry leaf yield and leaf/stem ratio for each cut (C1, C2, C3 ,C4) Nutrifeed hybrid gave the highest total forage green yield ( 194.9 and 178.9 t/ha), the highest total dry yield (22.3 and 20.1 t/ha), the highest leaf dry yield (12.7 and 11.3 t/ha), and the highest leaf/stem ratio (56.7 and 56.1%) for the two seasons 2008 and 2009 respectively. Nutrifeed showed resistance to loading and leaf rust disease, contains no prussic acid so it can be grazed at a much earlier stage than forage sorghum. Also the two hybrids Superdan 2 and Sugargraze were superior in green matter, dry matter and dry leaf yield. Nutrifeed, Superdan 2 and Sugargraze can be used for making high quality hay and silage, in addition to grazing.
