It has long been recognized as a contributing to a variety of adverse health consequences. The major factors responsible for hypertension are obesity where epidemiologic studies have revealed the correlation between body weight and the risk of hypertension. The study aims to identify any association between overweight and obesity with hypertension . In addition, to determine the association it with demographic characteristics of the study populationMaterials and methods: A case control study design has been adopted upon 224 subjects (112 cases and 112 controls) attending Al Zahra hospital in Kut city during the period from 1st of July 2016 to end of September 2016. Required data were obtained by direct interview with hypertensive patients and normotensive subjects. Statistical analysis was done by using Minitab version 18.0.Results: the percent of obesity was 37.50 % and overweight was 46.43% among cases. There was statistically significant association between obesity and hypertension (p<0.05). No statistical association of hypertension with demographic characteristics (p>0.05).Conclusions: Hypertension tends to affect age groups between 45-75 years and prevalence in female is more than in males, also it is more prevalent in urban areas than among rural areas. A statistically significant association was proved for obesity and hypertension.Recommendations: Encourage patients to change their lifestyle through decreasing their weight, adapting physical activity and following healthy eating habits. خلفية البحث والاهداف: يعد ارتفاع ضغط الدم مرض مزمن غير انتقالي عرف منذ فترة طويلة بانه يسهم في مجموعة متنوعة من العواقب الصحية الضارة. وتعد السمنة العامل الاساسي المتسبب بارتفاع ضغط الدم حيث كشفت الدراسات الوبائية العلاقة بين وزن الجسم وخطر ارتفاع ضغط الدم. كان الهدف من الدراسة التعرف على العلاقة بين زيادة الوزن والبدانة مع ارتفاع ضغط الدم. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، لتحديد العلاقة بين ارتفاع ضغط الدم و الصفات الديموغرافية لمجتمع الدراسةمنهجية البحث: تم إجراء دراسة الحالة والشاهد على مجموعة مكونة من 224 مريضا ) 112 حالة و 112 شاهداً( المراجعين لمستشفى الزهراء في مدينة الكوت. للفترة من يوليو 2016 إلى سبتمبر 2016 وتم الحصول على البيانات المطلوبة من خلال مقابلة مع المرضى الذين يعانون من ارتفاع ضغط الدم والذين لا يعانون منه. تم إجراء التحليل الإحصائي باستخدام Minitab 18.0 .النتائج: كانت نسبة السمنة 37.51 ٪ و الوزن الزائد 46.43 ٪ بين الحالات. وبينت الدراسة ان هناك ارتباط ذو دلالة إحصائية بين السمنة وارتفاع ضغط الدم . (p <0.05) كما اوضحت هذه الدراسة انه لا يوجد ارتباطا بين ارتفاع ضغط الدم والخصائص الديموغرافية (p> 0.05) .الاستنتاجات : ان تأثير ارتفاع ضغط الدم يكون اكثر على الفئات العمرية بين 45-75سنة ومعدل انتشاره -اكثر في الاناث من الذكور وفي المناطق الحضرية . كما لوحظ وجود علاقة ذات دلالة احصائية بين السمنة وارتفاع ضغط الدمالتوصيات: تشجيع المريض على تغيير نمط حياته من خلال انقاص وزن الجسم، واعتماد النشاط البدني وتبني عادات الأكل الصحية . تفعيل دور الإعلام في رفع مستوى الوعي بمشاكل ارتفاع ضغط الدم والبدانة.} }
