TY - JOUR ID - TI - Role of IL-6 and IL-10 as biomarkers in diagnosis of bacteremia in hemodialysis patients PY - 2019 VL - 11 IS - 2 SP - 34 EP - 41 JO - Al-Kufa University Journal for Biology SN - 20738854 23116544 AB - A cross-sectional hospital based study was done from November 2017 to February 2019 including 240 patients with chronic renal disease (168 males and 72 females) whose ages were between 15-75 years and they admitted to hemodialysis unit of Kirkuk general hospital. The study also included 50 individuals of blood donors as control group. Twelve ml of blood were collected by vein puncture using vacutainer syringe from each patient and control enrolled in this study, 10 ml of blood were injected in two 5 ml blood culture bottle sterilely for isolation of bacteria causing bacteremia, blood is sampled directly into two aerobic and one anaerobic blood culture bottles containing culture broth. The second part of the sample was 2 ml were centrifuged, the obtained sera were manipulated for determination of IL-6 and IL-10 levels using ELISA technique. The study showed that 32.25% of HD patients have positive blood culture while no one of blood donors have a positive blood culture. The highest rate of isolated bacteria from HD patients (51.28%) was G-ve bacteria comparing with G+ve bacteria. The study showed that there was highly significant relation of IL-6 and IL-10 with bacteremia. The highest means level of IL-6 and IL-10 were recorded among HD patients with bacteremia followed by patients HD patients without bacteremia and the lowest level mean level of IL-6 was found in blood donors. The study revealed that the highest mean level of IL-6 and IL-10 were recorded among HD patients with G-ve causing bacteremia (566.3 pg/ml) compared with patients HD patients with G+ve causing bacteremia (493.7 pg/ml).
