This region of approximation is called geometrical optics. When the wave character of the light may not be ignored, the field is known as physical optics. Since the wavelength of light is very small compared to ordinary objects, early unrefined observations of the behavior of a light beam passing through apertures or around obstacles in its path could be handled by geometrical optics.
