هناك علاقة وثيقة بين الطبيعة الجغرافية لمدينة مكة المكرمة والمياه ، بدءا بالاسم حيث يُعتقد أن اسم مكة مشتق من عملية استخراج المياه فيها ، باعتبار إن مكة الماء أي مصه ومنه جاء اسم مكة ، كما إن الطبيعة التضاريسية لمكة المكرمة بانتشار الجبال والأودية وطبيعة تربة الأودية المسامية التي تسمح بتسرب الماء إلى داخلها جعلها تشكل أحواضا كبيرة من المياه الجوفية وكونت مصدرا مهما لمياه الآبار ، كما ساهمت بيئتها الصحراوية الحارة الجافة على ارتفاع درجة التبخر وعدم انتظام كمية الأمطار وتعرضها للرياح المحملة بالغبار والرمال ، فضلا عن إن التركيبة الصخرية لجوف الأرض في مكة ووجود الصدوع والشقوق والفواصل فيها كان أحد عوامل تغذية المياه الجوفية لبعض الآبار المحفورة في الصخور .
