Some Dialectal Phenomena in Quranic Handwriting

Abstract

It is possible to come across some dialectal phenomena in Quranic handwriting as one may go through some ancient Arabic dialects. Then we may notice the Quranic handwriting.We will find then some parallelism between the dialectal course and the Quranichandwriting.An example is the exaggerated alif which appeared in some words in which the Alif appeared in waaw as in salawat and zakawat. The alifis not pronouncedpurealif, nor pure waaw, but leaning the aliftowards the waaw. It has also been found out that the signs of leaning like leaning alif towards the yaa᾿ in handwriting the Quranwhich is writing the alif on the chair of yaa᾿. Ancient references said that leaning is a well-known dialectal phenomenon in the tribes of Qays, Tameem, Asad and others.The present paper has dealt with the phenomenon of writing the connected taa᾿ as stretched taa᾿ in some words with restricting the lengthening sounds in the Holy Quran and the relevance of this to the prominent dialectal phenomena in the Arab Peninsula during the coming of the Holy Quran.The paper has dealt with the phenomenon of Hamz in the Quranwhich shows that the Quran did not come in Quraysh dialect only. It in fact came in the dialects of several tribal dialects.
