Cohesiveness and Consistency in the Views of Scholars of Syntax, Rhetoric and text linguistics (A study of the views of the predecessors and new theoreticians)

Abstract

What is often seen in the researchers conducted by some linguists is the limitation of syntax and rhetoric. It is believed that syntax and rhetoric possess narrow sight and limited boarders in comparison with text linguistic which views the whole text as a complete and consistent language unit. Therefore, they lack sufficient efficiency and cannot play any roles in the formation of innovative linguistic theories. But the fact is that syntax and rhetoric possess specific devices and strong functions which have undeniable impact on language debates and have a share in the formation of the most common and latest linguistic theories.The present research seeks to prove the full awareness of scholars in ancient syntax, rhetoric and critics of relatedness and cohesion amongst text language and the contents of texts. Due to the fact the research contributes to some concepts of text linguistics in Muslims' syntax, rhetoric and critics heritage. Furthermore, the statements of the ancient linguists about syntax and rhetoric contents in achieving cohesiveness are reviewed. The declarations of several Muslim scholars about consistency and cohesiveness of different components of a single text are also underlined.Of the most significant results of the present research is that relatedness and consistency amongst the contents of the text, was took as granted for Muslim scholars and it can be claimed that they detected form and meaning cohesive devices centuries ago, their declarations about the mentioned field in some critical and rhetorical books acknowledges the fact as well.Key words: text consistency, syntax, rhetoric, text linguistic,Views, predecessors, new theoreticians, Muslims.
