Abstract

Abstract: Today, cities suffer from multi and different problems as a result of the accelerating urban growth resulted from the rising number of population by the birth and death, and immigration. Basra is one of the cities that suffered from frequent immigration waves as well as overpopulation which dealt with uses of urban land (residential, commercial, industrial, and service) which changes the space of these uses whether it was negative or positive cadastral changes.This study depends on remote sensing technologies (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) as an applied basis to draw the land uses' cadastral changes to reveal temporal and spatial changes which contributed in changing uses of residential land in Basra (1977-2016) which result changes in class of use which refers to obsessing the cadastral use over others (commercial, industrial, service) which is called positive change. While if the referred urban uses cut a part from residential use and take it to, then, it will be called negative class of use.Many factors (political, social, and economical)contributed in aggravating the problem of cadastral changes of the urban lands' uses and the important one is the residential one, weather it was Whether it be at the expense of other uses, the uses of agricultural lands, or the empty spaces, so that the city lost a part of urban privacy of its own to have a case of randomness and confusion in most of its districts specially in the period after 2003, so that, this research came to highlight the overall cadastral changes of Basra city within the mentioned period, which approximately can be considered as centuries of the city life.
