Abstract

The current research aimed to achieve the following objectives:1.Measuring personality traits as determined by Al-Mustanseriyah–Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory M-MMPI for the people suffering from oral and dental diseases (which determined by the current research).2.Determining the relationship between personality traits and oral and dental diseases according to the research variables.3.Determining the differences in personality traits for those who suffering from oral and dental diseases according to the research variables.The research had a limitation within the followings:1.Adult clients from some of the specialized dental clinics, who suffers from certain oral and dental diseases in Baghdad city for the period from 15/9/2010 until 15/5/2011, and from both sexes (males and females).2.A. Specialized Health Center for Dentistry in Al–Elwia, the side of Rusafa in Baghdad.B. Specialized Health Center for Dentistry in Al-Maamon, the side of the Al-Karkh in Baghdad.C. Private Dental Clinic of Dr. Saadi Jawad, Karada - Baghdad.3.The following Oral and Dental diseases: (Tooth decay, Deep tooth decay (which requires root fillings); Gingivitis; Spots and discoloration of the teeth (Requires cleaning of the teeth); Oral and dental diseases that require different surgeries).To achieve the objectives of the current research, Al-Mustanseriyah–Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory M-MMPI (Developed by Al-Salihy, 1998) has been administered on a sample of (182) patients who suffers from oral and dental diseases from the clients of the above-mentioned clinics from both sexes, distributed to (56) female patients, and (126) male patients, their ages ranged from (16 and 60) years, with an age average of (27.51) and Standard Deviation of (8.804), and holding at least a primary school certificate (So they can answer the test easily).The research objectives have been all verified, and showed that the more significant features was characterized (among the majority of subjects), by undesirable thinking processes, strange perceptions, social alienation, poor in family relationships, difficulties in concentration and sexual difficulties, problems related to self identity, emotional withdrawal and isolation from the society, suspiciousness and hostility, unbalance, lack of insight in the behavior, and some other psychological symptoms. The other features that are located in the second place are characterized by rigidity, hatred, poor morale, excessive sensitivity in personal relationships and unjustified suspiciousness. The third significant features that occurred in the third place are characteristic by obsessive compulsive, which includes all forms of phobias anomalous non-natural of things and attitudes, also includes the excessive and exaggerated answer to reasonable stimuli, self-criticism, anxiety, difficulty in concentrating, guilt feelings, extreme reluctance in decision-making, and general dissatisfaction with life.The second aim, has been also verified and found a significant correlation between oral and dental diseases in general, and between personality traits according to the research instrument, and we found that the most significant scale correlates with these diseases is the Hypochondriasis (Hs) scale.As regard to the third aim, we found a significant differences in personality traits between males and females who suffer from oral and dental diseases in favor of females, i.e., that personality traits appears more in females than it appears in males, and we also found a significant correlations with each of the following four scale: Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), Conversion Hysteria (Hy), and Psychasthenia (Pt).On the other hand, the results did not show any significant differences in personality traits between males and females who suffer from oral and dental diseases, with the following scales: Psychopathic Deviation (Pd), Paranoia (Pa),) Schizophrenia (Sc), and Hypomania (Ma).The research came out at the end with some of recommendations and suggestions.
