Doctrines in Assyrian Sculpture

Abstract

The research titled (Doctrines in Assyrian Sculpture) deals with the ability of the Assyrian sculptor to reflect and translate these beliefs in the Assyrian sculpture with different varieties, including prominent and stereoscopic sculptures and winged bulls in addition to obelisks and scenes of hunting lions.The research was composed of the first section in which we dealt with the basic foundations of doctrines in the ancient Iraq. The second section was titled the doctrines and their reflection in the Assyrian sculpture in which eight models have been selected according to the inductive approach of analysis in order to reveal the basic beliefs in the Assyrian thought and the reflection of that in the selected models. While the third section listed a set of results, the most important of which are:1-The sculptor inherited and employed the old Iraqi style in the formative construction of sculptural scenes.2-The Assyrian sculptor emphasized the conceptual synthesis in accordance with the Iraqi ancient thought of Assyria.3-Assyrian sculptor emphasized the symbolic and futuristic thought in the winged bulls.4-The sculptures dealt with the question of confirming the authority and power of the king and the power of his empire and translating his victories.
