ENGLISH BREAKING NEWS AND THEIR KURDISH TRANSLATIONS A Linguistic and Political Analysis

Abstract

Ideology and politics are the motivators of every piece of information; they are impended everywhere in the news story, from the very beginning to the last note in the body of the story. For every reader, breaking news (BN) is a credible and authoritative source for local, regional and international information having immediate concerns. To draw the watchers’ attention to their reports and coverage, the media channels rely very heavily on BN. It can outline the reading process and figure out what to read and what to pass by within ideological framework. This study puts a set of objectives to assess the quality of Kurdish translations of the English BN cross the divergent ideological background, mainly: •To highlight the syntactic and semantic variations in practices and explore reasons for these variations (e.g. political, linguistic or socio-cultural); and•To evaluate the quality of Kurdish translations in terms of structure, content and political context. The data of the study consists of four BN with their translations/interpretations to highlight the critical need for standards in translating BN into Kurdish without being biased. House’s (2007) model of ‘Translation Quality Assessment’ (TQA) is applied as a model of data analysis to measure the ideological influence.
