Sedimentological and mineralogical study of caliche deposits and sand sheets in Shirqat area, north of Iraq

Abstract

The sand sheets dunes in Shirqat area was studied to investigate the mineral composition and mode of occurrence. The study revealed that these dunes are present in a patched, longitudinal consist of light brown, fine, well sorted friable sand consist primarily of quartz, whereas the feldspar, heavy minerals and clay minerals present in a secondary amounts. The interdune area is semi-flat on the top ot it present calcic crust(caliche) consist primilary of calcite and clay minerals.
