Prevalence of Breast Cancer in Hadramout Governorate-Yemen, Using Capture-recapture Method

Abstract

AbstractIntroduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among female worldwide. In this study we aim at highlighting the problem of breast cancer by using the capture-recapture method (CR) and to estimate the prevalence of breast cancer in Hadramout governorate. This would be the first time that this method is being used in Yemen.Method: In this paper we used five lists to obtain greater accuracy. All females with breast cancer, proved histopathologically (old and new patients) in Hadramout governorate which had been registered were collected. For breast cancer prevalence estimation in Hadramout governorate we used capture-recapture method and application of a program created by Jemain using soft ware S-plus 2000. The principle of this program is to estimate the maximal log likelihood of the probability of female breast cancer . The best fit-model has been chosen regarding to specific criteria. Results: The CR prevalence rate of breast cancer in this study was estimated as 26.2 /100,000 Yemeni women vs. crude prevalence which estimated as 17.2/100,000 Yemeni women. Conclusion: By using capture-recapture method we can identify the missing cases of breast cancer which was estimated in this study as 1/3 total number.
