Abstract

ABSTRACTMaps are considered means for expressing special analysis used to view, store information, means of documentation and a way of communication between the map creator and the reader. As such, maps have grown in importance to become a stage for presentation, analysis and decision-making. Colors in a map are one of the most important visual variables that express what is being conveyed in the said map. The importance of adding colors into a map stems from the fact that these colors are the link between the map and the beholder's eye, thus facilitating the process of perception on the part of the reader. The research aims at studying the parameters in which one can successfully determine the colors to be used on a map containing residential blocks. Generally, the process of adding colors to residential blocks on a map is not usually based upon systematic standards, which include measuring the total area of the residential blocks, the number of people living in each block using the Geographical Information System (GIS) to determine the number of adjacent polygons and extract a neighbor class for each neighborhood in order to employ the appropriate color to side neighborhoods according to parameters based on colors, shades of colors, and overlap of colors and its relation with the shade value of the color black.
