Abstract

Propolis is a natural resinous matter,collected by honeybees from plant exudates .The purpose of this study is isolation and identification of gram positive bacteria that causes skin infections and detection the antimicrbial activity of ethanolic propolis on isolated bacteria.Atotal 82 clinical specimens were collected from patients clinically diagnosed as cases of bacterial skin infections in consutlant of dermatology in Marghan Hospital in Babylon province during .the period from Steptember 2010 to Febuary 2011 .Gram positive bacteria were isolated from 56 specimens and 26specimens exhibited gram negative bacteria ,as a causative agent.Gram positive bacteria identified by cultural and biochemical tests,among those isolates , 35 isolates were Staphylococcus epidermidis and 21 isolates were S.aureus.the effect of %30 ethanolic exetract of two kinds of propolis(commercial and natural propolis) was tested against isolated bacteria by using agar well diffusion method .This method included adding 0.2 ml from the extract per well with using 0.2 ml from ethanolic alcohol %70 as a control .the effect of two kinds ethanolic extract commerical and naturalare noted .The commercial extract was mor action on isolated bacteria than natural extract.The diameter of inhibition zones of local extract was 35.5 mm for Staphylococcus epidermides and 29.5 mm for S.aureus while the diameter of inhibition zone for commercial extract was 45 mm on S.epidermidis and 40 mm on S.aureus.This study showed that ethanolic extract of propolis has high activity than 15 antibiotic were used in this study.The results of this experminet showed that commercial propolis has high antimicrobial than natural propo-lis than local propolis
