Abstract

In the process of creating artistic works, the contemporary poets pay special attention to heritages due to their prominent position. Therefore, it has been widely prevalent in their poetry. The reason is that heritage is like a bridge between the past and present. This study is an attempt to analyze the topic of heritage in the poetry of the Jordanian Contemporary Poet, Ayman Al-Atum. Along with applying heritage in the body of his odes, the poet deals with depicting the human challenges, contemporary life crises and the problems with which the Islamic and Arabic societies are encountered, especially the topics which are closely related to Palestine. Accordingly, defending the religious and national identity, conflicting with Zeionist Regime and dependency to homeland are among the most important motivations of the poet to apply heritage in his poetry. This study has been conducted based on an analytico-descriptive method while emphasis is put on the Arabic contemporary literature resources to analyze the topic. Finally, the study came to this conclusion that usage of heritage in the poet’s poetry has not been subconsciously performed but created through full awareness and consciousness through which he attempts to unveil the challenges of the contemporary human, on the one hand, and on the other hand, to add features of originality and rootedness to his own poetry. The most important manifestations of heritage in Ayman Al-Atum’s poetry are religious, historical, literary and Sufi heritages.
