Gentamicin In Treatment Of Infant Pneumonia

Abstract

Gnetamicin is aminoglycoside agent of adverse effects like ototoxicity & nephrotoxicity. such adverse effects can be minimize by using daily calculated dose in no more than twice daily .A seventy infant patients with pneumonia their diagnosis based on clinical feature ,X-ray study & laboratory data(elevated W.B.C) included in this study .All patients receive gentamicin as 3.5 mg/kg/day for a period not exceeding 5 days, give twice daily doses . An 87% of the patients were improved by this study. No serious adverse effect was demonstrated. On decreasing daily frequency of gentamicin administration & keeping the dose constant a good result obtained. Sub-sequent doses of gentamicin produce a smaller bactericidal effects .Once daily dose of least as effects as & are less of adverse effects than triple daily dose .Long dosing interval may improve efficacy by allowing time for adaptive resistance to resolve.
