Misuse Of Antimicrobial Drugs In Mukalla City

Abstract

This study is carried out to determine types of antimicrobials misuse with inappropriate use orprescribing of drugs, specially the antibiotics. 250 persons, 250 prescriptions & 60 pharmacistswere included in this study. Findings revealed that antibiotics form 26.3% of total drugs used.Amoxicillin was found to be the highest one used among antibiotics. The most antimicrobial drugused in al Mukalla as over- the- counter product was found to be amoxicillin (39.40%). Thosepeople who use antimicrobial drugs with prescription are 33.07% and those without prescriptionare 66.93%. 69.72% of patients use antimicrobial drugs according to doctors instructions, while30.28% do use antimicrobial drugs not according to the instructions and the full time of the courseof treatment, and the causes were; feeling of recovery (60.92%), carelessness (12.64%), distrust(6.90%) expensiveness of antimicrobial drugs (13.79%) and other causes (5.75%). 43.45% of thoseusing antibiotics without prescription have some knowledge about complications of antimicrobialdrugs and use it without prescription while 56.55% have no knowledge about the complications.5.58% of those using antimicrobial drugs as over the counter were illetrate, 24.8% with low levelof education, 9.92% intermediate level and 58.28% with high level of education. For the role ofpharmacist, only 26.83% of pharmacists do not give the antimicrobial drugs without prescriptionand 47.39% of pharmacists give explanation to patients about how to use the antimicrobial drugs.51.2% of the prescriptions contain only one antibiotic, 10%contain two antibiotics, and 38.8%werewithout antibiotics
