Input errors in the database and its impact on the recovery process

Abstract

The computerized index and building database for books and theses at the Library of the University of Technology was used since 1989. Following 20 years, the researcher was able to do the process of assessing a database by recognizing errors and differences when entering words or letters to the database and its impact on the process of recovery that needed for improving the availability of information for the users and providing the access points for the computerized index, in addition to decreasing the time needed for searching and reaching the information for the users to develop the library status in society. It’s a practical study that depends mainly on searching the computerized index and identifying the errors in it. The paper found that errors have been reported in many fields of card indexing from where the data was transferred to the computerized index, a matter which led to failure in reaching the book despite being there in the library. Some of those errors were omitting, changing, or adding letters and spaces. The researcher made a study case to know everything about the computerized index. It comes out with a number of conclusions including many errors in computerized index due to the lack of uniformity in the entry. Also the study came out with a set of recommendations including a review of what has entered into the computer and make sure the data is correct in spelling and printing.
