Abstract

ABSTRACTRemote sensing technique available activity tool for monitoring dynamic natural phenomena like the hydrology of river basins. This research includes the application of digital image processing technique on two types of remote sensing data to monitaring variations in the hydrology of Tigris River width in Mosul city.The remote sensing data were used represented by three aerial photographis that taken in (1987), and the satellite image that acquired by Thematic Mapper sensor in (2001) (band 4).The algorithm that have been used consisted of preprocessing, enhancement and rectification techniques by using (Matlab 7.0) and (ERDAS 8.6), to measure the variation of location course way of Tigris River. The study showed that Tigris River in the Mosul city exhabite a large variations in river location area during the two analysied periods.From the results, we noted that the greater value of variation was at the left side of the city about (210.66 m), (368.55), and (170.866) for the three aerial photographs respectively, while the greater value was at the left side of city for second photo that represent the exit of the river from the city.It also notes an increase in the numbers and sizes of mid bars of the river which shows variation in both the morphological and the river power.
