Synthesis and characterisation of some polyester derived from Curcumin

Abstract

AbstractFour models compound and six polymers of conjucated β- diketone derived from curcumin.Compoundswere synthesized from the reaction of curcumin with aliphaticacid chloride(Butyryl chloride,Octnyl chloride) and aromatic acid chloride (Benzoyl chloride, Anisoyl chloride).Six polymers have beenprepared from curcuminmesogenand diacid chloride (n= 3,4,5,7,8,10).The structure of resulting compoundswere identified by IR and elemental analysis . Phase transition behaviors were observed bydifferential scanningcalorimeter (DSC) and polarizing hotstage microscope.Microscopic observations and DSC measurmentsconfirm that aromatic models of Curcumin givesliquid crystalline properties which is nematic phase at 170while allThe polymers ofcurcumin prepared will decompose at high temperatures so no phase transition couldbe noticed.
