The Visit of Sudanese Prime Minister to Iraq in March 1957 in unpublished Iraqi Documents

Abstract

It was shown that the visit of the prime minister of Sudan to Iraq by an invitation from the Iraqi Government was a friendly visit more than a political one not as circulated in the Egyptian press which regarded the visit as an attempt from Nouri Al-Sa'eed to insert Sudan in Baghdad alliance for all realized that recently independent Sudan on 1st of January 1956 was unqualified practically to enter political or military alliances and was originally suffering from problems even before its independence. Also, this visit revealed undoubtedly the depth of the difference between Jamal Abdul Naser and the Iraqi government. This was clear in his executing a group of Al-Ikhwan Al-Muslimeen Sudan organization without any mercy, as if he wanted to send a message saying that Egypt was the holder of the greatest favor in Sudan's independence and that the Sudanese government should make enemies of the Abdul Naser's enemies regardless of all historical and diplomatic considerations. In addition, the Sudanese leaders' experience in managing their country's foreign affairs when the were opened on all Arabic countries through taking a middle situation towards some Arab-Arab differences from which the Arabic countries suffered from, for example, the prime minister Abdullah Khalil visited Iraq after completing his visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without addressing the differences between Saudi leaders and Abdul Naser. This situation proves peerless political experience and knowledge. Whatsoever, this visit opened wide horizons for Sudan through the treaty signed between the Iraqi-Sudanese sides, consequently, it contributed in the rise of the Sudanese economy when the Iraqi government invested a lot of money inside Sudan through the Iraqi banks which opened branches in Sudan to develop the industry and agriculture which in turn got the welfare to the brother Sudanese people.
