Detection of Melamine in Dry Milk Samples of Iraqi Markets and Study the Biological Effects on Rabbits

Abstract

This study was conducted in Food Science laboratories, College of Agriculture, Tikrit University at the period from 15 Sept.2011 to 15 Aug.2012 to collected and preparation some dry milk samples founds in Iraqi markets , and determine the melamine concentration in dry milk samples, and assay the effects of the same concentration in some physiological parameters in rabbits. The results indicated to occurred contaminated of eleven (55%) by melamine from total dry samples at concentration between 5.9 to 17.5 mg/kg in Norosoy and Kecoz milk groups samples respectively, when study the effects of the orally dosage from 0.05 , 0.1 and 0.2 mg /ml of standard melamine and 0.1 mg/ml from two melamine contaminated of milk samples in some rabbit physiological blood parameters, the results founds significantly (p<0.05) increased of red blood cells (RBC) and packed cell volume (PCV) , while decreased the hemoglobin (Hb), while the Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) , Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) were significantly increased while the Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) was not different significantly, the white blood cells counts (WBC) was decreased significantly and the Lymphocyte cell percentage was increased while the Neutrophil cells was decreased which was indicated as stress on cells occurred through significantly increased in N/L ratio with increased of orally dosage of melamine, also were significantly increased at total protein, albumin, globulin and increased of Alanine Transaminase (ALT) , Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alkaline Phosphatase (AP) with the increased of standard melamine and contaminated with milk orally dosage concentration in blood plasma of rabbits .
