Abstract

In this paper some glycerol derivatives (2-aryl glycerol) and polymerization was prepared four steps as follows : Firstly: reaction of 1 mole of glycerol with 3 mole of formic acid to produce glycerol triformate ( E1 ) by using (poly vinyl benzene sulphonic acid) as catalyst. Secondly: reaction of (E1) with series of aromatic compounds like ( toluene , chlorobenzene and m-xylene ) in presence of aluminum silicate as catalyst to form 2-aryl glycerol triformate derivative( E2 - E4 ). Thirdly: hydrolysis of compounds (E2-E4) in acidic media to produce 2-aryl glycerol derivative (T1-T3). Fourthly step: polymerization of derivatives (T1-T3) with cyclic anhydrides such as ( Phthalic , Succinic and Maleic anhydride) to yield a crosslinkage polymers which were called as poly 2-aryl glyptal (P4-P12). The prepared glyptal (Alkyde resin) by direct reaction of glycerol with the same cyclic anhydride above(P1-P3). All the prepared compounds were monitored by spectroscopic methods such as: IR, Elemental analysis C.H.N, and some in NMR.
