Abstract

In this work, analytical results for the effect of phase noise on the spectral line width of laser diodes used in optical communications systems and the factors determining the effect of such type of noise are presented. Three factors: spontaneous emission rate, total number of photons inside laser cavity and line width broadening factor were considered with an explanation of their effect on the spectrum of the laser output. These results are an attempt to achieve the optimum operation conditions and control design parameters of the transmitter in optical communications systems.
