Investigating the Relationship between Learner's Gender, Proficiency and Language Learning Strategies: The Case of EFL Iraqi Learners

Abstract

Studying the use of language learning strategies in terms of learner's variables like proficiency and gender has been the focus of a growing body of research in an endeavour to find out any possible relation between them. The present study attempts to shed light on such a relationship as far as EFL Iraqi learners are concerned. For this purpose , Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language Learning ( SILL ) ( 1990 ) is manipulated. The results which are based on the descriptive statistics indicate that the EFL Iraqi learners are medium strategy users. The most frequently used strategies are Metacognitive strategies and the least frequently used ones are Compensation strategies.. One way ANOVA Test shows that Learners with better EFL proficiency report using the overall strategy and each of the six categories of strategy significantly more frequently than learners with lower EFL proficiency do. The study reveals no significant gender differences among overall strategy use.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the hostility of university student all department and either sex (Female – male) and Tries to Find the correlation between hostility and the Family Socialization patterns. The sample was choose randemally which is consisted of (138) students (2001 – 2002). Two scale were used in this study 1. Scale of hostility. 2.Scale of Family Socialization. The result of this study bellow: 1. the means of university students hostility included in the study was less than the hypothetical means the scale that’s mean the students have not feeling of hostility. 2. there is positive (Significant) correlation between the hostility and family socialization patternes (authoritarian parental). 3. there is negative (significant) correlation between the hostility and family socialization patternes.(non-authoritaran parental). الملخص:- هدفت هذه الدراسة قياس العدائية لدى طلبة الجامعة ولكافة الأقسام ولكلا الجنسين (ذكر – أنثى) وأيضاً حاولت التعرف على العلاقة بين العدائية وأساليب التنشئة الوالدية اختيرت العينة بطريقة عشوائية قوامها (138) طالب وطالبة للعام الدراسي (2001 – 2002) وقد تم استخدام مقياسين هما:- 1. مقياس العدائية. 2. مقياس أساليب التنشئة الوالدية. وأشارت نتائج هذه الدراسة: 1. أن متوسط درجات العدائية لدى طلبة الجامعة المشمولين بالبحث هو اقل من متوسط ألفرقي للمقياس. وهذا يعني أن لا يوجد لديهم مشاعر العدائية. 2. يوجد علاقة ارتباطيه موجبة ذات دلالة إحصائية بين العدائية ونمط أساليب التنشئة الوالدية (التسلط). 3. يوجد علاقة ارتباطيه سالبة ذات دلالة إحصائية بين العدائية ونمط أساليب التنشئة الوالدية (السواء).
