Abstract

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND : Beck Depression Inventory (often abbreviated asBDI) is an instrument to measure the severity and depth ofdepression symptoms. BDI was developed in a novel way for its time by collating patients' verbatim descriptions of their symptoms and using these to construct a scale which could reflect the intensity or severity of a givensymptom. OBJECTIVE:To measure the validity of Beck depression Inventory short version using ICD 10 criteria for major depression as a gold standard METHOD AND PATIENTS :The study was carried out in IbnRushd and Baghdad Teaching Hospitals. The sample was selected purposely among patients diagnosed to have major depressive disorder according to the ICD- 10 criteria for major depressive disorder. For each patient a clinical interview was done using the ICD 10 criteria for major depressive episode after being given beck depression inventory – short version in a paper RESULTS :The overall result indicates ‘fair to good’ agreement between both Beck and ICD-10 suggesting that Beck Depression Inventory is valid in assessing the degree of severity of depression CONCLUSION: Beck Depression Inventory short version (13 item ) is adequate in assessing the severity of depression in patients with ICD-10 diagnosis of depression

Abstract

To evaluate the depressive features that accompanies Parkinson’s disease and its relation to different parameter of this disease. This cross sectional study examined 30 patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease neurologically and psychiatrically, searching for depression and its association with different features of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. The American diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM-IV) and the international classification of the disease (ICD10) were used for diagnosis of depression.53% of Parkinson’s disease patients were found to be depressed and their depression significantly correlated with autonomic system infliction, dysphagia and insomnia. This finding was not correlated with duration or severity of the Parkinson’s disease or the late complications of the disease. We found depression to be very common among Parkinson’s disease patients; however, no specific type of depression could be identified in those patients. There is significant association between depression and autonomic involvement, insomnia and dysphagia in Parkinson’s disease. Depression in Parkinson’s disease was not found to be related to the age of onset or to the duration of the disease.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Postpartum depression is a global, life-threatening disorder which affects particular mothers in their post-natal periods. It’s regarded to be one of the major disabling conditions of motherhood. We aimed to study the rate of, as well as assessing a group of psycho-obstetrical risk factors behind postpartum depression. Methods: 98 newly gave-birth mothers were recruited with mean age of 27.07 year between the periods of November 2009 to February 2010. Edinburg Post-natal Depression Scale was adopted by authors for the assessment of postpartum depression. Comparisons on groups of demographic, obstetrical, and psychological data were done between both positive and negative mothers for the disorder. Results: 39.8% of mothers were diagnosed as postpartum depression. For which, no particular demographic factors were significantly predictive for. Depressed mothers were of significant higher mean number of gestation with p value of 0.0472. However, no other obstetrical factors revealed back statistical significant differences. Past history of depres-sive disorders, whether post-natal or not, was significant predictor for current postpartum depression with p value of 0.02 for history of previous postpartum depression, and p value of 0.042 for non postpartum depressive disorders. Conclusion: Postpartum depression is highly prevalent in our society. History of depres-sive disorders is a strong predictor for future postpartum disorder. However, there were no clear correlation between postpartum depression and other demographic and obstetrical data apart from the mean number of gestation.

The proportion of depression among cases (69%) was higher than that among controls (17.5%) (P<0.001), and the proportion of anxiety among cases (56%) was higher than that among controls (16%) (P<0.001). Multiple logistic re-gression analysis of risk factors for depression revealed that breast cancer (OR=10.531), owned home (OR=0.463), and years of formal education (OR=0.917) have a statistically significant association with depression. While breast cancer (OR=8.735) and parity (OR=1.167) have a statistically significant association with anxiety and borderline anxiety. Conclusion: Increased levels of depression and anxiety after a diagnosis of breast cancer highlight the need for dedicated psychiatric service provision.
