Abstract

Background:- White spot lesions are common esthetic problem that compromise the success of orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to assess white spot lesions in patients with fixed orthodontic appliance at different time intervals.Materials & Methods:- Thirty two patients (24 females and 8 males) were included in this study and they underwent clinical examination for white spot lesions using enamel decalcification index at four time intervals: (2-3 weeks after appliance insertion, 2, 4 and 6 months).Results:- The patients were free of white spot lesions at the appliance insertion visit. The mean of white spot lesions was 2.22 which were increased significantly during six months to reach 24.59 at the end of study. There was a significant difference between the maxillary and the mandibular arches, however, there was no significant difference found between the right and the left sides in both arches. The total numbers of teeth affected by white spot lesions were 74.61% after six months of treatment. Maxillary second premolar and mandibular canine were the most affected teeth; whereas the gingival area around the orthodontic brackets was the most affected area.Conclusion:-Orthodontic patients had a high risk for development of white spot lesions

Abstract

Background: The integration of modern computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies in diagnosis, treatment planning, and appliance construction is changing the way in which orthodontic treatment is provided to patients. The aim of this study is to assess the validity of digital and rapid prototyped orthodontic study models as compared to their original stone models.Materials and methods: The sample of the study consisted of 30 study models with well-aligned, Angle Class I malocclusion. The models were digitized with desktop scanner to create digital models. Digital files were then converted to plastic physical casts using prototyping machine, which utilizes the fused deposition modeling technology. Polylactic acid polymer was chosen as the printing material. Twenty four linear measurements were taken from digital and prototyped models and were compared to their original stone models “the gold standard”, utilizing the paired sample t-test and Bland-Altman plots.Results: Eighteen of the twenty four variables showed non-significant differences when digital models were compared to stone models. The levels of agreement between the two methods showed that all differences were within the clinically accepted limits. For prototyped models, more than half of the variables differed in non-significant amount. The levels of agreement were also within the clinically accepted limits.Conclusion: Digital orthodontic study models are accurate in measuring the selected variables and they have the potential to replace conventional stone models. The selected rapid prototyping technique proved to be accurate in term of diagnosis and might be suitable for some appliance construction

Abstract

Aim: This clinical study is to investigate the effect of fasting (Sawm) Ramadan on thecount of streptococcus mutans in plaque surrounding fixed orthodontic appliances.Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with orthodontic appliances wereparticipated in this study. Plaque specimens were collected from those patients attwo occasions, during Rmadan fasting (Sawm) and after they break there fastingafter Ramadan. The plaque Streptococcus mutans number of colony-formingunits (CFU) was analyzed by using Dentocult SM Strip mutans test.Results: This study demonstrated highly significant difference in Streptococcusmutans (CFU) counts in plaque between the values obtained from fasting patientsduring Ramadan and when they are breaking the fast after Ramadan.Conclusions: during Ramadan fasting, persons change timing and types of their foodand beverages consuming as well as teeth cleaning habits. Therefore orthodontistshould be aware of their patients’ oral hygiene during Ramadan by promoting andmaintaining satisfactory teeth cleaning during fasting (Sawm) and Iftar hours.

Abstract

Background and objective: Orthodontic space opening is a common treatment for congenitally missing teeth. Dental implants are often used to replace the missing tooth to establish ideal esthetics without restoring the adjacent teeth. This study aimed to investigate the outcome of implants placed in orthodontically created bone. Methods: Fifty dental implants were used for rehabilitation of lost tooth/teeth in 30 patients after space creation using orthodontic treatment. Patients with congenital and traumatic missing tooth/teeth, who lost the space for accommodation of normal size crown, and patients with spacing were enrolled in the study. NiTi open coil spring was used for space creation. The patients were followed up clinically and radiographically (OPG). Results: Out of 50 implants, the success rate was 78% (39 implants). Eleven implants (22%) failed to get osseointegration. Mean age of the patients was 26.33. Female patients constituted 63.33%, and male patients 36.67%. A new one replaced all the failed implants. Most of the failures were in the mandible. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment can be used as a type of osteodistraction method for provision of an acceptable amount of bone for dental implants. The quality of the gained bone can be improved by offering sufficient time for healing.

Abstract

Background and objective: Thermal change in pulp chamber with the use of light cured adhesives is one of the contemporary concerns for orthodontists. This study aimed to evaluate intra pulpal temperature rises during bracket bonding using three different light sources.Methods: Sixty intact-extracted mandibular premolars were divided into three groups of twenty teeth for each. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the buccal surface of all the teeth with Transbond XT adhesive applying a constant force, first group light cured with halogen light, in second group light emitting diode was used, in third group plasma, arc light was used. The measurements were taken with a J-type thermocouple wire, placed in the center of the pulp chamber and connected to a data plugger.Results: Statistical analysis showed that temperatures of pulp chamber change were influenced by a type of light source. The intra pulpal temperature changes for halogen was higher than a light emitting diode and both were higher than plasma arc. All the groups revealed a significant difference between each other.Conclusion: Orthodontic bonding with using different light source did not exceed the critical 5.5° C temperature rise that may induce a thermal change in the pulp.

Abstract

Background: Decalcification of enamel surface adjacent to fixed orthodontic appliances, in the form of white spot lesions, is a wide spread and familiar well-known side effect of orthodontic treatment. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of enamel protective agent (Clinpro white varnish) on shear and tensile bond strength of Dentaurum orthodontic stainless steel brackets by using 3M Unitek and Ormco as orthodontic adhesive agents.Materials and methods: Sixty-four extracted human upper first premolar teeth were selected and randomly divided into two groups with 32 teeth each, representing the shear and tensile bond strength testing groups. Then according to the type of bonding adhesive and the addition of Clinpro before bonding (3M, Clinpro + 3M, Ormco, Clinpro + Ormco) each group was subdivided into four equal subgroups each with 8 teeth. After passing twenty-four hours of bonding procedure, where the samples were kept at 37˚C the brackets were debonded by using Tinius-Olsen universal testing machine to record the shear and tensile bond strength value. The difference in bond strength was analyzed by using ANOVA test at p≤0.05.Results: The use of Clinpro with 3M Unitek orthodontic bonding agent shows higher shear and tensile bond strength than Clinpro with Ormco orthodontic bonding agent.Conclusions: Using Clinpro white varnish before bonding can be successfully used with 3M Unitek orthodontic bonding agent.

Abstract

The heat treatment is necessary for 2205 duplex stainless steel to remove or dissolve intermetallic phases, removed segregation and to relieve any residual thermal stress in DSS which may be formed during production processes. In the present study, the corrosion resistance of a 2205 DSS in artificial saliva was studied by SEM, XRD, HV test and potentiodynamic measurements. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance mainly effected by ferrite /austenite ratio. The best result was obtained with the treatment at 900°C for 2 min. The austenite phase has corrosion resistance higher than ferrite.

المعالجة الحرارية ضرورية لل2205 للفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ المزدوج لإزالة أوتذويب أطوار المركبات المعدنية و إزالة الانعزال وكذلك توهين الإجهادات الحرارية المتبقية في الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ المزدوج والتي تتكون أثناء عمليات الإنتاج. في هذه الدراسة تمت دراسة مقاومة التآكل لل2205 الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ المزدوج في اللعاب الاصطناعي بواسطة المجهر الاكتروني الماسح، حيود الأشعة السينية، صلادة فيكرز وأختبار التأكل الكهروكيمياوي وتشير النتائج إلى أن مقاومة التآكل تتأثر بصورة رئيسية لوجود أطوار الثانوية (طور سيكما ( ونسبة الفرايت / الأوستينايت. تم الحصول على أفضل النتائج مع المعالجة الحراريه عند 900 درجة سيليزية لمدة 2 دقيقة. طور الأستينايت يمتلك مقاومة للتآكل أعلى من الفرايت و طور سيكما له تأثير ضار على سلوك التآكل لل 2205 الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ المزدوج .
