Mechanical Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Filled With Silica Fume, Glass Powder and Carbon Black

Abstract

In this study a polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have been prepared with the aid of ultrasonic wave dispersion method for mixing , using of unsaturated polyester resin with Silica Fume(SF), Glass Powder (GP)and Carbon Black (CB). Moulds were prepared by hand-made from silicon rubber according to the ASTM standard table (4). The fillers added separately with different ratios as (0%,0.5%, 1%, 1.5 %, 2%,2.5% and 3%).The results show increase the hardness and impact strength when added GP, SF, and CB to polymer matrix. Flexural strength and maximum shear stress decrease when added silica fume , but when added glass powder and carbon black led to increase flexural strength and maximum shear stress to certain percent at ( 2%, 1.5% for GP and CB respectively) then dropped when increase weight fraction of GP, CB . Compressive strength decrease when added glass powder and carbon black, while it is increase when added silica fume to polymer matrix. Wear rate decrease when increase weight fraction of carbon black but it increases when added GP and SF.

Abstract

The composites were manufactured and study the effect of addition of filler (nanoparticles SiO2 treated with silane) at different weight ratios (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) %, on electrical, mechanical and thermal properties. Materials were mixed with each other using an ultrasound, and then pour the mixture into the molds to suit all measurements. The electrical characteristics were studied within a range of frequencies (50-1M) Hz at room temperature, where the best results were shown at the fill ratio (1%), and thermal properties at (X=3 %), the mechanical properties at the filler ratio (2%).

تم تصنيع المركبات ودراسة تأثير إضافة الحشو (الجسيمات النانوية SiO2 المعالجة سطحيا) بنسب وزنية مختلفة 5)و (1, 2, 3, 4 %، على الخصائص الكهربائية والميكانيكية والحرارية. خلطت المواد مع بعضها البعض باستخدام جهاز الموجات فوق الصوتية، ثم صب الخليط في قوالب لتناسب جميع القياسات. درست الخصائص الكهربائية ضمن مجموعة من الترددات (50-1M) Hzفي درجة حرارة الغرفة، حيث أظهرت أفضل النتائج عند نسبة التعبئة (1%) والحرارية عند ( X=3%)، الخواص الميكانيكية عند نسبة حشو (2%).

Abstract

In this study laminate composites were prepared, one was reinforced with three layers of kevlar fibers at (Vf = 17.89%) and the second was reinforced with hybrid laminate with sequence of layers (Kevlar-Glass-kevlar (KGK)) at (Vf = 15.3%), samples were tested before and after silica addition at volume fraction (3%). Tests were (tensile, flexural, impact, hardness, and optical microscope), hand lay-up technique used to prepare samples. Matrix was unsaturated polyester resin. Results showed that mechanical properties (tensile strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness) decreased after silica addition from (190 MPa, 610 MPa, 35.6 MPa.m1/2 ) to (100.5 MPa, 212MPa, 27.7 MPa.m1/2 ) respectively for composite reinforced with three layers of Kevlar fibers at (Vf = 17.89%) and from (175.5 MPa, 387 MPa, 32.36 MPa.m1/2 ) to (67.6 MPa, 210 MPa, 23 MPa.m1/2 ) respectively for laminate composite with layers (Kevlar-Glass-Kevlar (KGK)) at (Vf = 15.3%). Hardness increased after addition of silica from (79.25 to 81.2) for composite with three layers of Kevlar fibers at (Vf = 17.89%) and from (80 to 82.3) for composite with layers (Kevlar-Glass-Kevlar (KGK)). Optical microscope showed that layers were distributed in matrix and addition of silica leads to delamination of composite after using flexural test.

Abstract

this research investigates the erosion wear behavior of polyester resin composites materials reinforced with 4% volume fraction carbon fiber and (2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) volume fraction Al2O3 powder. These specimens were fabricated by hand lay-up technique. Erosion wear behavior was studied at different variables, are angles impingement (30º, 60º, 90º), with dry silica sand particles size (350,425,600 µm) at 10 hour, stand-off distance (17 cm) and flow rate (35 L ∕min). In this research erosion testing were carried out according to ASTM G76 and study effect of parameters on erosion wear rate by using Taguchi orthogonal arrays L9. The results indicate that, the specimen (UP+4%C.F+8% Al2O3) has high value of true density than other specimens. Also the specimen (UP+4%C.F+8% Al2O3) has (0.00011 cm3/gm) better erosion rate resistance at variables (425 µm , 30 º ) as compare to other composite materials . The ANOVE analysis showed that filler content factor (Al2O3) powder more effect on erosion rate than other factors

في هذا البحث تم التقصي عن سلوك بلى التعرية لمواد متراكبة من رانتج البولي استر غير المشبع المقواة مع كسر حجمي4 % من الالياف الكاربون ومسحوق الالومينا بكسور حجمية (2%,4 %, 6% و 8%), صنعت هذة العينات بتقنية الصب الیدوي . تم دراسة سلوك بلى التعرية عند متغيرات مختلفة وكانت زاوية التصادم (30º, 60º, 90º) و حجم دقائق رمل السيكا الجافه 350,425,600 µm)) مايكرون عند 10 ساعات و مسافة التصادم (17cm ) و معدل جريان (35 L∕min) . في هذا البحث كان اختبار بلى التعرية وفقا (ASTM G76) و دراسة تأثير المتغيرات على معدل بلى التعرية بواسطة استخدام المصفوفات المتعامدة لتاكوجي L9 . اشارت النتائج ان عينة (UP+4%CF+8%Al2O3) تمتلك اعلى قيمة من الكثافة الحقيقية من العينات الاخرى . ايضا من النتائج يمكن ملاحظة ان العينة (UP+4%C.F+8% Al2O3) تمتلك (( 0.00011 cm3/gm) افضل مقاومة لتعرية عند المتغيرات (425 µm , 30 º ) كمقارنة مع المواد المتراكبة الاخرى . تحليل الانوفا اظهر بان عامل محتوى الحشوه لدقائق (Al2O3 ) هو الاكثر تاثيرا على معدل التعرية من العوامل الاخرى
