Abstract

Numerous studies have been carried out on studying the effect of glass fiber and ZrO2 Nano-particles alone on the mechanical properties of PMMA, to date, no investigations were made that have studied the mechanical properties of PMMA reinforced with glass fiber and zirconium oxide together as a hybrid composite.In this research the effect of addition of glass fibers (woven and chopped) and Zirconium oxide Nano-particles (ZrO2) with different weight percent to the conventional poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been evaluated.The conventional acrylic resin was used as 2:1 powder to liquid ratio to prepare pure sample, laminate composite prepared by using woven glass fiber (8wt%, 12wt%), fiber-reinforced composite fabricated by chopped glass fiber (8wt%, 12wt%), particle-reinforced composite prepared by using ZrO2 Nano-powder (1, 2, 3) wt%, and the hybrid composite fabricated by using glass fiber as woven or chopped of the two form with ZrO2 Nano-particles. The flexural strength (F.S.) was measured by using three point-bending test. The mechanical test done in order to compare the flexural strength between pure and composite samples. The form of glass fiber with the same weight percent affects the mechanical properties values. Reinforcing PMMA with woven glass fiber and zirconium oxide increase flexural strength, while incorporation of chopped glass fiber decrease the flexural strength. Using the two materials together as a hybrid composite recorded very high raises of flexural strength values. From the results, it's possible to syntheses a denture base resin with good aesthetic and high mechanical properties from fiber and ZrO2 Nano-particles

Abstract

Background Microorganisms and fungal growth especially Candida albicans, on soft denture lining material are the most common problem which can lead to chronic mucosal inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of zirconium nanoparticles into acrylic-based heat cured soft denture lining material against Candida albicans, and the amount of zirconium ion release of soft liner/ZrNPs composite. Furthermore, evaluate shear bond strength after ZrNPs addition to soft liner.Materials and methods: Zirconium nanoparticles were added into acrylic-based soft denture liner in various percentages (1%, and 1.5% by weight). Two hundred and fifty specimens were arranged and isolated into four groups as per the test to be done The antifungal activity of the soft liner/ZrNPs composite was assessed in three different periods by using two methods (viable count of C. albicans and disk-diffusion test). In two distinct periods, amount of zirconium released in artificial saliva was detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Instron testing machine was used to test the shear bond strength of the soft liner to the acrylic denture base material.Results: A highly significant decrease in colony forming units of C. albicans in experimental groups (1% and 1.5%ZrNPs) contrast with control group. There was no inhibition zone around any specimen of any test group. In artificial saliva there was no zirconium distinguished to be released at any incubation period. There was a highly significant increase in the mean value of shear bonding strength after incorporation of ZrNPs at 1.5% percentage into soft liner.Conclusion: The addition of ZrNPs into acrylic-based soft denture lining material helps to provide soft denture liner with antifungal properties, thus reducing the susceptibility to develop denture-induced stomatitis. There is no zirconium has been detected at any incubation period and there is increased in the shear bond strength of the soft lining material.

Abstract

This research has studied the effect of addition glass fibers (woven and chopped) and Zirconium oxide Nano-particles (ZrO2) with different weight percent to the conventional poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The prepared Nano-crystalline ZrO2 powder with particle size of about 95nm was syntheses directly by sol-gel method. The gel dried at 100oC for 1 hour and annelid at 400oC for 3 hours. The conventional acrylic resin prepared with 2:1 powder to liquid ratio to prepare pure sample, composite samples prepared by reinforcing PMMA with woven or chopped glass fiber (8, 12) wt.%, and reinforcing by (1,2,3) wt.% of prepared ZrO2 Nano-powder. The structural tests include: (XRD, AFM, and FTIR). The crystallized phase composition of dried ZrO2 powder after annealing in air at 400oC has been identified by x-ray diffractometry (XRD). The grain size of dried ZrO2 Nano-particles by atomic force microscope (AFM). The impact strength (I.S.) was measured by using Charpy impact test. The mechanical test done in order to compare the impact strength between pure and composite samples. From the result, the reinforcing PMMA with glass fiber in two forms (woven and chopped) improve the impact strength, while increasing of ZrO2 Nano powder loading led to decrease the impact strength.

في هذا البحث تم دراسة تأثير اضافة الياف الزجاج (حصيره, ومقطعه) و مسحوق الزركونيا النانوي بنسب وزنية مختلفة الى بوليمر البولي مثيل ميثاكرليت PMMA. مسحوق الزركونيا النانوي المحضر بحجم 95 نانومتر تم تحضيره مباشرة بطريقة ال sol-gel. تم تجفيف الجل بدرجة 100 سيليزي لمدة ساعة واحدة و حرقت بدرجة 400 سيليزي لمدة (3) ساعات تم استخدام راتنج الاكريلك التقليدي بنسبه 1:2 المسحوق الى السائل لتحضير العينه النقيه, وصُنعت النماذج المتراكبة بتقوية البولي مثيل ميثاكرليت بحصيرة والباف الزجاج المقطعة بنسب وزنية (12, 8) وكذلك باضافة (3,2,1) نسبة وزنية من مسحوق الزركونيا النانوي المحضر. تتضمن الفحوصات التركيبيه: (FTIR, AFM, XRD). حيث تم فحص تركيب الطور البلوري لمسحوق لزركونيا المجففه بعد تلدينها بدرجة 400سيليزي بواسطة جهاز ال (XRD). والحجم الحبيبي لمسحوق الزركونيا النانوي المجفف تم ايجاده بواسطه (AFM). تم قياس متانه الصدمة باستخدام فحص جاربي charpy)) بدون حز, تم اجراء الفحص الميكانيكي لمقارنة مقاومة الصدمة بين النماذج النقيه و المتراكبه. من النتائج, وجد ان تدعيم بوليمر الPMMA بالياف الزجاج بالشكلين (الحصيرة والمقطعة) يحسن من متانة الصدمة, بينما زيادة مسحوق الزركونيا النانوي يؤدي الى نقصان متانة الصدمة.

Abstract

Propolis is consist of various amounts of resins and beeswaxes thatproduced by the honeybees from different natural plants, as leafbuds and flowers. It is a sticky and dark-brown color material thatproduced by honeybees from natural plants that the bees mixed itwith wax and applied it in building, construction and adaptation ofthe nests specially in repair cracks and defects in the bees hive.They have been used in medical folk or medical traditional sincetimes of ancient. It is now known to be natural medical treatmentwith, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxiditive, antitumor andmmunomodulatory properties. These medical properties ofpropolis are motivating isolation researches, identification of thepossible relationship of these with its biological activity, andchemical compounds. It was used in dentistry for healing ofsurgical wound (or post-surgical mouth pain), toothhypersensitivity, pulp capping and root canal treatment. Propolishas a promising goal in future medically. This research shows theapplication of propolis, clinically, as a natural dental medicine.Furthermore; systemic and clinical applications of these drugs mayhave some adverse effects like liver toxicity, drug interactions etc.Using propolis as antifungal by local application shown that itreduces the incidence of dry socket and denture stomatitis thatassociated with the Candida. In present study, the propolis hasbeen used in the following manner. It is applied to the tissuesurfaces of dentures, two times daily for two weeks. Propolis puttycan also applied to dry socket cases after complete debridementand irrigation of it. The results showed after use propolis that thesigns and symptoms including pain, redness and inflammationareas related stomatitis were gradually disappear, after 2 to 14days the denture stomatitis is healing by using a propolis paste.Propolis putty has an effect on the fungal infection of dry socketthat gradually reduced pain and inflammation until completehealing. Aim of the study, after the treatment of patients withdenture stomatitis, they were subjected to examination andevaluation of the mucosa and socket, Candidal quantitativecultures and confirmation the diagnosis by three methods: Germtube, Gram Stain, and ChromAgar media.

The Influence of Chlorhexidine Diacetate Salt Incorporation Into Soft Denture Lining Material on Its Antifungal And Some Mechanical Properties

Abstract

Background: One of the most common problem associated with the used of soft denture lining material is microorganisms and fungal growth especially Candida albicans, which can result in chronic mucosal inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of chlorhexidine diacetate (CDA) salt Incorporation into soft denture lining material on antifungal activity; against Candida albicans, and the amount of chlorhexidine di-acetate salt leached out of soft liner/CDA composite. Furthermore, evaluate shear bond strength and hardness after CDA addition to soft linerMaterials and methods: chlorhexidine diacetate salt was added to soft denture lining material at four different concentrations (0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% by weight). Four hundred and fifty specimens were made and divided into four groups according to the test to be performed. Disk diffusion test was used to evaluate the antifungal activity of the soft liner/CDA composite after four different periods of incubation in artificial saliva. UV spectroscopy was used to evaluate the amount of accumulative and periodic CDA released in artificial saliva after 2 days, 2 weeks and 4 weeks incubation in artificial saliva. The shear bond strength and shore A hardness was measured after 2 and 4 weeks incubation in artificial saliva and the results were statistically analyzed.Results: All experimental groups showed a highly significant increase in diameter of inhibition zone around the test specimen in compare with control group. The release of Chlorhexidine showed to be dose dependent. The shore A hardness a highly significant increase with the addition of CDA and as for shear bonding strength, the addition of CDA at 0.5% and 1.5% percentage resulted in a highly significant decrease in bond strength, while 2.5% and 3.5% percentage showed non-significant differences in compare with control.Conclusion: soft denture lining material with antifungal properties was the result of CDA salt incorporation which indicate that chlorhexidine was released in affected concentration from soft liner/CDA composite. This incorporation resulted in Hardness increase and did not affect the shear bond strength for 2.5% and 3.5% percentage. Abstract

To measure the MBFs to PMMA & flexible base partial dentures in the people who have free end extension over various periods of adaptation.Thirty free end extension people have been choose and they with: a Cl. I, (36-45) years & means 40 years of age. Fifteen with upper or lower Cl.I without mode area whereas the residual fifteen people with Cl.I opposite Cl.I . The MBF measured at 1st molars area by occlusal force gauge. Then, recording done (at 1st, 10th, 30th, 90th day) from the flexible removable prosthesis insertion primarily then the acrylic prosthesis. Biggest mean value of MBF was listed in first group at 90th days after insertion flexible removable prosthesis (105.58330 N), and as a whole, flexible removable prosthesis giving the biggest biting forces in both group than acrylic prosthesis and the differences were significant at (p˂0.05) between them in the MBF .The persons in group one give biggest biting forces in all periods of adaptation when wear flexible removable prosthesis than acrylic prosthesis, and it will increased with increased period of adaptation, with the least biting forces at 1st days & the biggest at 90th days in the two study group. The conclusion. MBF of person wear removable prosthesis flexible base type was greater from that wear acrylic type , period of adaptation when increase, the bite force become greater. The person wear one prosthesis opposite normal dentitions give MBF greater than the person wearing a two prosthesis upper against lower [Kennedy classification Cl. I opposite Cl. I] .

Abstract

Background and objective: Dry pressure curing device is one of the devices used in curing of acrylic resin denture bases. This study aimed to evaluate some properties of acrylic resins, cured by three different techniques.Methods: Two hundred and fifty two specimens were prepared from two brands of heat curing acrylic resin (Paladent20 and Major). The specimens were cured by three techniques (dry heat pressure curing, conventional curing and microwave irradiation). For each curing technique, seven specimens were prepared and some mechanical and physical properties were tested.Results: Less residual monomer showed in the dry heat pressure curing of Paladent 20 acrylic resin. The conventional curing of Major acrylic resin has shown the least porosity. The highest bending strength and less water sorption showed by microwave irradiation of Major acrylic resin specimens.Conclusion: Some properties of the specimens cured by the dry heat pressure curing device were better than other curing techniques. The microwave irradiation has some good properties when compared with other techniques. The Paladent 20 brand of acrylic resin showed better properties than the Major acrylic resin.

Abstract

Poly Methyl Methacrylate were widely accepted material in dental and medical field due to the excellent biocompatibility and easy fabrication, however exhibit inferior mechanical properties. Therefore, the present study conducted to determine the flexural properties of PMMA based material by reinforcing PMMA with two different natural fibers (bamboo & siwak fibers). Discontinuous random fibers used in three lengths (2, 6 & 12 mm) and three weight percentage (3, 6 & 9 wt. %) of the both types of fibers. Results indicated that Flexural modulus, flexural strength and max.shear stress increase with increasing weight fraction and fiber length of fibers (bamboo & siwak) and reach the maximum amount at addition of weight fraction of (9 wt.%) and (12mm) length of fibers. The highest value of flexural modulus, flexural strength and max.shear stress were (10.09GPa), (112MPa), (6MPa) respectively, for composite specimens with bamboo fibers, while for composite specimen with siwak fibers (9.71GPa),(101MPa),(4.44MPa) at the optimum condition of (9wt.%) and (12mm) length . All composite specimens reinforced with bamboo fibers showed the highest flexural strength and flexural modulus among the composite specimen reinforced by siwak fibers.

ان مادة البولي مثيل ميثا اكريليت مادة مقبولة بشكل واسع في تطبيقات طقم الاسنان والتطبيقات الطبي نظرا للتوافق الطبي وسهولة التصنيع على الرغم من الخواص الميكانيكية الضعيفة. لذلك فان الدراسة الحالية تهدف لحساب خصائص الانحناء لبوليمر البولي مثيل ميثا اكريليت المقوى بنوعين من الالياف الطبيعية (الياف السواك والخيزران) والتي استخدمت بشكل متقطع عشوائي الترتيب بثلاث اطوال (2 و 6 و12 ملم) وثلاث كسور وزنية (3 و6 و9 %) لكلا النوعين من الالياف. ولقد بينت النتائج ان معامل الانحناء ومقاومة الانحناء واجهاد القص الاعظم تزداد مع زيادة الكسر الوزني وطول الليف لالياف الخيزران والسواك وتصل الى اعظم قيمة عند (9%) و (12 ملم).وان اعلى قيم لمعامل الانحناء ومقاومة الانحناء واقصى اجهاد قص للعينات المتراكبة المقواة بالياف الخيزران ( GPa10.09, 112 MPa , (6MPa بينما للعينات المتراكبة المقواة بالياف السواك (4.44 MPa,101MPa,9.71GPa) على التوالي عند افضل ظروف (12 ملم و 9%).كل العينات المتراكبة المقواة بالياف الخيزران تكون لها قيم معامل انحناء ومقاومة انحناء اعلى من المواد المتراكبة المقواة بالياف السواك .

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a broad term that encompasses number of clinicalproblems including the temporomandibular joints, the masticatory musculature and relatedstructures, or both. The etiology of TMD is ambiguous since the signs and symptomswhich exist in patients with natural teeth may also being observed in edentulous patients.Thus, TMD is a multifactorial problem with varying symptoms combinations and rates.Relationship between removable complete dentures and tempromandibular joint disorder indifferent gender and age groups. A total of 30 patients (15 female and 15 male) whosubmitted to Prosthodontics Department, College of Dentistry, Al-MustansiriyahUniversity to make a new complete denture. The age of participants ranges from (40-80)years with the mean age (65.8) years. Two clinical examiners conducted the patient’sexamination; the first examiner takes on a questionnaire to identify the TMD symptomssigns and. Clinical examination of the patients was assessed through part I, II of researchdiagnostic criteria pre and post one and two months of applying the prosthesis. The clinicalevaluation of prosthesis done by the second clinical examiner related to (retention, stability,fitness, occlusion and centric relation) was evaluated twice at predetermined intervals of 1and 2 months after construction and delivery of denture.Evaluation performed by using Dawson's bimanual technique and recorded within clinicalcase sheet for complete denture records. The present study shows that the highestfrequency of TMD obtained in age group of 70-80 years old followed by age group of 60-69 years old at all intervals, internal derangement (ID frequency) significantly higher infemales than male patients (p=0.02). There is significant statistical difference regarding theMyofacial pain dysfunction (MPD) frequency according to the time of using the dentures,those patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) formed the highest percentage (39.1%) of thosewhom presented with MPD followed by those with Hypertension (HT) (32%) and thosewith history of HT and DM represent (17.4%) onlyThe results also illustrated that prosthesis properties (retention, stability, fitness, occlusionand centric relation) show significant relation with TMDs improvement post one and twomonths. Most patients with complete denture perceived improvement in the sign andsymptoms of TMDs.
