Malondialdehyde Level in the Patients Subjected to Open Heart Surgery in Association with Lipid Profile

Abstract

Background: Reactive oxygen species are usually produced by the living cell and have different functions in its normal activity and considered as one of the factors that involved in heart disease. Malondialdehyde (MDA) considered as one of the most indictors of oxidative stress and damage produced as a result of lipid peroxidation. Objectives: The main objective is to evaluate serum oxidative stress by measuring the changes in the level of MDA as a marker of oxidative stress and demonstrate the correlation of MDA with lipid profile in patients subjected to open‑heart surgery. Methods: A case–control study was carried out in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of medicine,Tikrit University, Tikrit, Iraq. The study was carried out for 50 patients subjected to open‑heart surgery recruited from the Medical City/IraqiCenter for Heart Disease and Ibn Al‑Bitar Cardiac Surgery Center, Department of Cardiac Surgery, Baghdad, Iraq between October 1, 2017and March 1, 2018. The levels of MDA and lipid profile were measured in the serum of 50 patients, in three different interval preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative and compared with 30 age‑ and gender‑matched controls. Results: The results revealed a statistically significant difference in the serum MDA level between patient during preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative stage against control group and significant differences in their MDA levels among all patients’ stages. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between serum MDA level and total cholesterol in the early postoperative stage. Conclusions: There was an increase in the level of MDA in the early postoperative stage as an indicator of reperfusion damage that occurs immediately after open‑heart surgery which then decreases dramatically with decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low‑density lipoprotein‑cholesterol (LDL‑C), and very‑LDL‑C.

Abstract

The study included (120) pregnancies during the months and the trimesters of pregnancy: first trimester, second trimester and third trimester conducted in Aljmhwry Republican hospital and Al- salaam Health center / Kirkuk with (20) (non-pregnant) women whom served as control, and (20) as postpartum 1n the age (18-40) years. the study was carried out from 1/3/2016 –5/3/2017.The aim of this study to evaluate the serum levels of lipid profile (TC,TG,HDL and LDL), malondialdehyde (MDA) as an oxidative stress marker and superoxide dismutase as an antioxidant enzyme during pregnancy period and post-partum. The results showed a significant differentes in lipid profile and a significant increase in MDA during the months and the trimesters of pregnancy, while there was a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity during pregnancy and in postpartum in comparison with those of control group.

اجريت الدراسة على (135) حالة حمل لدى النساء الحوامل حملاً طبيعياً وخلال المراحل الثلاثة للحمل first trimester و second trimester و third trimester. بإلاضافة الى (40) حالة قسمت بين (20) حالة امرأة غير حامل كمجموعة سيطرة و(20) حالة بعد الولادة وذلك في مستشفى الجمهوري العام ومركز صحي السلام / كركوك وللفترة من 1-3-2016 الى 15-3-2017 و تراوحت اعمارهن بين (40 – 18) ســـــــنة. كان الهدف من الدراسة تقييم مستويات المرتسم الدهني (الكوليسترول الكلي TC، الكليسيرايد الثلاثي TG، البروتين الدهني العالي الكثافة HDL و البروتين الدهني الواطئ الكثافة LDL في مصل الدم، ومستويات المالون داي الديهايد MDA وهو كناتج نهائي لعملية بيروكسدة الدهون بالإضافة الى تقييم فعالية انزيم السوبراوكسايد ديسميوتيز SOD كأنزيم مضاد للأكسدة في مصل الدم. تم قياس مستويات المرتسم الدهني ومستويات المالون داي الديهايد وفعالية انزيم السوبر اوكسايد ديسميوتيز باستخدام عدد التحاليل Kit لكل منها وحسب الطريقة المتبعة من قبل الشركة المجهزة لكل عدة أظهرت نتائج الدراسة فروقات معنوية في المرتسم الدهني خلال اشهر الحمل والمراحل الحملية وفترة ما بعد الولادة، وارتفاع معنوي في مستويات المالون داي الديهايد MDAوانخفاض مستويات السوبر اوكسايد ديسميوتيز SOD في الاشهر الثلاثة الاخيرة من الحمل مقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة وما بعد الولادة.
